Services - Inventory

INVENTORY CONTROL

Inventory control for equipment owned or rented is a challenge on every project. Failure to control the location and use of formwork and shoring equipment on a project is the fastest way to incur an unwelcome budget busting surprise. Not only is the cost at the end when the rental company or your own equipment yard hits the project for lost or unaccounted for product, the project suffers the loss of productivity as your supervisor surveys the project site for that one missing critical piece while the crew waits patiently wondering what kind-a-outfit they are working for.

Inventory control starts with application engineering and follows through the entire construction process until the last piece is returned to the originating yard.

Equipment take-off generates the equipment needs for each phase of the project. This is further broken down in to requirements timed to meet specific areas of work, cycling and recovery schedules.

Specific Equipment = Delivery - Cycling – Recovery

Once the equipment requirements are identified equipment order strips are produced for use by the yard and the project site personnel. The order strip is keyed to project engineering and is checked by both to insure that all substitutions are addressed at time of delivery. The equipment is accounted for and its use identified. The equipment provided is either for a specific area or is a tool kit that may serve several areas. The need to differentiate the use of equipment is critical in reducing rental costs and insuring continuity for crews using forming and shoring products.

Specific Equipment = Tool Kit OR Identified Components

Lay down is minimized and equipment movement around the site is controlled if proper accounting is maintained. This may sound fundamental but I cannot tell you the number of sites that I have visited where the same equipment is moved over and over again with out being put to use. This is quite an expense in manpower and if equipment is on rental real dollars wasted.

Demobilization, always a challenge on projects is easier and accounting for the product is much simpler when the equipment counts are known and the shipper documents are maintained. Routine review of invoices and “Site Reports” prevent phantom equipment from becoming an issue when close out occurs. Return counts and shipping documentation give the contractor control of the project inventory at little additional cost.
